Lighter and Stronger
Equiplite gear from Australia
Australian company EquipLite has created a new line of hardware for performance oriented sailors to maximize boat speed.
At great expense modern boats have gained a large measure of their high performance by the extensive use of composites in all areas, and then covered the boat with mostly stainless steel hardware. Hardware weight has not been significantly reduced in recent years, and uses only a small amount of composite.
By the use of carbon and spectra composites in most hardware areas, connectors, blocks and other fittings can now be built at the same quality to bear the same loads, but with weight savings from 50 to 150%, at similar or less cost.
EquipLite has been successfully testing these new fittings in top race boats since 1999, and is currently supplying numerous new boats as well as some of the top Volvo and AC syndicates.
EquipLite Spectra Lock Hardware utilizes an SK75 Spectra loop to take fitting loads.
This allows EquipLite connectors, blocks, and other hardware to be substantially lighter, and in most cases less expensive than traditional fittings of the same load.
This new type of connector is based on the use of a loop of super SK75 Spectra which is formed by cold molding a head of compressed fibers as shown at right. This loop concept is used in a variety of applications show to minimize weight.
Non Swiveling Connectors
Non Swiveling Connectors uses anodized Hi tensile Alum. bobbin. With the replaceable loop fitted in the center, together with a protective locking Velcro strap, as shown at left.
A halyard, sheet or rope is spliced around the bobbin as shown and the loop end is passed through an opening in a sail or fitted and placed over the shoulder groove of the fitting. The Velcro is wrapped around fitting to complete the attachment. This Velcro also act as a protector for masts, etc saving them from damage.NOTE: these connectors will not flog off even if the velcro tie is undone. In panic situations, the velcro tie can be done up after the crises has passed.
Sheet Collars
Jib sheets with barber haulers or control lines such as Farr 40's or similar may need the addition of protective collars fitted behind the fitting similar to a brace and sheet collar. These collars are available for Non Swiveling Connectors.
Swiveling Connectors
A swiveling Connector for spinnaker halyards, tacks and sheets is shown above. This connector is fitted in the same manner as the previous Non Swiveling connector.
